Miss Silliman

Miss Silliman is one of the most anticipated events and the highlight of the Hibalag season of Silliman University. This year’s Miss Silliman events, as always, were split into three: the press launch, which was held at the Henry’s Resort on August 16, the preliminary rounds held at the Luce Auditorium on August 22, and finally, the coronation night, which was held at the Macias Sports Complex on August 25. I attended as a spectator for all three events along with my friend.

The line of candidates for this year’s Miss Silliman were all incredibly beautiful, confident, and charismatic young women. Each candidate was chosen to represent each of their respective colleges, and in turn, their colleges gave the candidates their full support. Seeing the line of candidates, I initially placed my bets on Ms. COPVA, as she left quite a deep impression on me. Those expectations were elevated, especially after I heard her advocacy during the preliminary rounds of Miss Silliman. It surprised me, however, that she was not able to place among the Top 5 finalists during the Coronation Night. Though the thought was disheartening, I am also satisfied with the Top 5 finalists, as they truly did deserve their spots, especially the newly crowned 78th Miss Silliman, Ms. Micah Saycon from the College of Education.

The experience of attending all the Miss Silliman events has opened my eyes to how one’s chosen course can truly affect your advocacies in life. This was especially prominent with the Miss Silliman candidates. The events have taught me that having and standing by an advocacy truly requires extensive knowledge from your field of expertise. Since I wish to learn more about other people’s perspectives on their chosen topics, I will be attending the future events of Miss Silliman in order to gain more knowledge. The benefits of spectating the Miss Silliman events are more than just having entertainment for that duration; it can also be a learning experience for all, especially if you ponder on their advocacies enough. Should I be given the opportunity to observe the events again in the future, my only wish is that they start on time and not start late like this year’s events.

Because of this activity, I am finally realizing that Miss Silliman candidates can truly be cornerstones of the university, as they not only represent their respective colleges but also represent the entirety of the student body once they are crowned the new Miss Silliman.
