Silliman Library Trivia

The Silliman Library Trivia is an event hosted by the Silliman Library during its National Book Month Celebration. Like most of the library’s events during this month, it was an online event. The event was held from November 11 to November 15, with trivia questions posted daily to the library’s Facebook page. Participants in this trivia were a mix of Sillimanian students and Silliman staff or faculty. I also joined in answering the trivia during those days.

The Silliman Library Trivia did not gain that much traction online, so I initially expected that there would only be a few participants giving their answers to every question. However, I was wrong and saw that competition was fierce, especially since out of all the answers that were posted by participants in the comments of every post, only a few selected winners can be chosen. I viewed the event as a learning experience since the library’s history is not exactly common knowledge to everyone. The participants, especially those that gave answers as soon as every trivia question was posted, left a deep impression and competitive spirit in me. This activity allowed me to show off my competitiveness in answering the most complete answer out of everyone.

Because of this activity, I learned many things about Silliman. For example, the full name of the first Filipino President of Silliman University who was known for launching the Summer Writer’s Workshop, Dr. Leopoldo T. Ruiz. While I knew that Dr. Ruiz was the first Filipino Silliman President, I did not know before about him being the founder of the Summer Writer’s Workshop. I learned more things aside from this, and they were all deeply insightful about the university’s history. In the following years, should they hold another trivia event for the next National Book Month celebration, I will join and maybe finally get a prize. This event should be more widely known throughout the student populace since not only is it fun, it is also a rich learning experience for everyone. And I think the only way to do that would be changing Trivia's social media advertising next year.

Because of this activity, I am now more knowledgeable about Silliman University history and also the Silliman Library’s National Book Month event.
