Founder’s Week: CCS Guidance and Counseling Group Dynamics Activity

The Guidance and Counseling Group Dynamics Activity was an interactive event organized by the College of Computer Studies’ Guidance Counseling Office as a way of welcoming students to the college and to also socialize and introduce students to one another. It was held on August 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM at ATA Hall. Only first-year students were required to attend the event, which included me, my friend, and some other classmates of mine from my major subjects. The Confederates Student Council helped the guidance counselors in hosting the event.

While I did not learn a new skill, I was able to practice my social skills and also my collaboration skills since all the students were placed into groups. I initially expected the games to be more for individuals, but it surprised me to see that we all needed to participate as groups. It was challenging to socialize with my group mates, who I just met for the first time that day. However, my group mates were extremely helpful and kind and were also very active, and while we weren’t able to win any of the games, we still managed to have a lot of fun. The games that the counselors prepared for us truly tested our collaboration skills. Every game was a lot of fun, and I’m sure everyone enjoyed it.

Because of the activity, I learned to respect others and also collaborate with others under time pressure, even if we had just met that day. It was extremely important to realize this since I will also need to apply this when working with others in the future. While I would like to experience the activity all over again, I will be moving on to the next year level by next year, so I might only be supporting the activity through the CCS committee teams. This activity can benefit a lot of freshmen in my college, especially since this will be their first time experiencing the college and Silliman University as a whole. It is always nice to get a taste of what is to come for the future and to also get to know your future classmates better.

Because of this activity, I am better prepared for group collaboration and in also working with my classmates, peers, and batchmates in the College of Computer Studies.
