Balik Talent Lecture: Big data and IoT: Why they matter in Innovation

This lecture is the only Balik Talent Lecture of the CCS Founder’s Week celebration, “Big Data and IoT: Why They Matter in Innovation.” It was held on the 20th of August at 8:30 AM at ATA Hall with the guest speaker being Mr. Abraham Johannes T. Tourbier, a former BSIT student from Silliman University. The participants of this lecture were all CCS students, as it was a required event. This included me, of course.

Due to hearing the lecture, I acquired a new skill, which was “anticipation.” My first thoughts were very few since I, a freshmen CCS student, had barely any knowledge on the lecture topic. But while I initially thought that the topic wouldn’t interest me, Mr. Tourbier surprised me with the knowledge he had brought to the hall. He talked about how we, the future generation of programmers, should learn to anticipate the movements of our future customer base and also plan for decisions based on the data that that anticipation and observation have yielded. Mr. Tourbier went on to explain about many things related to how data and IoT can lead to more innovative ideas in the digital world, especially in the ever-growing age of technology. It was through this lecture that I learned to value the data analytics that go behind every website programmers build.

This lecture has opened my eyes to the importance of data analytics and decision-making and basing them off real-time data and data anticipation. I learned that analyzing big data through IoT tools can fundamentally change how our customers perceive changes to products and more. In the future, I would like to learn more about this topic, so I might tune in to more Balik Talent lectures in the future. The benefits of lectures like this are immeasurable, as they are truly eye-opening and helpful to CCS students. It is also specially relevant to today’s way of the digital world. Should I be able to attend this event again, I would wish to hear more practical and real-world examples from the guest speakers since they are already well endowed with this kind of knowledge.

Because of this activity, I am now more knowledgeable about big data, IoT, and how they affect the innovative ideas and techniques of programmers in today’s digital world.
