U13 & U15 Sagar Cup 2024
The U13 & U15 Sagar Cup was a basketball tournament held during the duration of the Buglasan Festival. The tournament featured basketball players from different schools all under the ages of 13 and 15. The particular match that I had watched was the match between the Don Bosco Greywolves versus Saint Francis College of Guihulngan. This match was held on October 12, 2024, at the Macias Sports Complex around 1:00 to 2:00 PM in the afternoon. I, along with my friend, were spectators during the match.
This match had taught me a valuable lesson. That lesson was “to persevere despite all odds.” I got this lesson from watching the losing Saint Francis College U13 team. And of course, while my initial expectations were that they would carry a huge loss against the Don Bosco Greywolves, I immediately took those thoughts back as I watched the young players play passionately and with determination despite the reality of the loss coming in. And while it was an inevitable defeat, the Saint Francis College team persevered despite it all and were not disheartened at all by the looks of things. I was surprised by their positivity and the encouragement of their coaches as well. It was a tilted match from the start, maybe due to their lack of experience, but it still goes to show just how much perseverance and a positive mind can change the way you look at defeat against strong adversaries.
Because of the match, I learned that even if the odds are all against you, it is always better to fight through challenges head-on and with your head held high. Even if the outcome might not change, if you change your perspective of defeat as a lesson instead of it being the end of all things, you can still learn and change the outcome of similar future events. By the next Sagar Cup, I hope that these young players will grow in experience and wisdom and maybe grab a medal or two next time. I will be sure to spectate in their next matches and maybe also invite my other friends along. These kinds of matches can be beneficial to not only the players but also the spectators as well. After all, seeing young people try and achieve their dreams amidst challenges is an inspiring thought, especially to us young adults who need that reminder every once in a while.
Because of this activity, I am now looking forward to what more achievements these two teams will earn during their time as players. I have also learned the very valuable lesson of perseverance, which can truly help me with daily life.
