Paglayag 2024: Freshie Walk
The Paglayag 2024: Freshie Walk is a yearly event organized by the Silliman University Student Government as a way of welcoming freshmen to the campus of Silliman University. This year, it was held at the Silliman University Amphitheater grounds on August 15, 2024, at 1:00 PM in the afternoon. The Freshie Walk is also a chance for sophomores, juniors, and seniors to shower the “freshies” with greetings to their respective colleges. It is also a way for the various student organizations of Silliman University to introduce themselves and recruit members to join. Since I am considered a freshman in the College of Computer Studies, I was required to join.
I initially expected the Freshie Walk to be a tour around the campus, just like the many times that it was in the past. That expectation was sadly shattered as I realized that the Freshmen Walk wasn’t even that much of a walk this year but only more of a gathering of all the freshmen. However, I was surprised at how well the program was handled. It was entertaining enough, and it included a lot of interactive adlibs for the freshmen crowd as well. Student President Ledesma and Vice President Burbano truly put all their effort into making this year’s Freshie Walk a resounding success, despite it being starkly different from the others before it.
Through this activity, I learned about the many different student organizations that a student can join during their time at Silliman University. Should a student wish to thoroughly enjoy their life inside the campus, they can join these organizations. Joining organizations is a good way of securing skills and credits for your student life, which is an incredible benefit. To maintain my involvement with the organizations, I must first apply for them and hope that they do not clash with my class schedules. The Freshie Walk was indeed satisfactory in their delivery of introductions, but the “walk” itself was disappointing. It might be one of the only things I would want changed if I am able to do the event again.
Because of this activity, I am now more inclined to join the student organizations mentioned in the Freshies Walk program and hopefully learn things through those groups.
