UCLEM Culmination Mass

The UCLEM Culmination Mass was held on November 27 on Amphitheatre grounds just in front of the Silliman Church. This activity is meant to mark the end of UCLEM and also usher in the start of Christmas with the lighting of the Silliman Christmas Tree. The event was open to everyone who wanted to join, which included students, professors, staff, and more. The event also had speakers, and President McCann also graced the occasion with her presence.

Because it was said to only be a mass, I initially thought that it would carry on in a simple religious fashion. However, I was surprised to see that the organizers had actually invited speakers to share their experiences with their “Life’s Giants,” which is in accordance with this UCLEM’s theme. The speaker that had the most impact on me was the very last speaker, whom I regrettably forgot the name of. His story of overcoming the fire that had burned down their family’s business was nothing short of inspirational and a tearjerker. It was then that I realized that the courage to move on and look forward is one of the greatest values a person can have.

Because of this activity, I now see people whose character is the same as that of that last speaker as people who are more than their achievement and character, but people who are greater than the giants themselves. To learn to fight and have the courage to move through life takes great determination, and that is something I truly admire and wish to learn. This UCLEM culmination has taught me that there are more stories that I could learn from. Since I wish to hear more in the future, I will continue to attend the UCLEM culminations should they come next year as well. I will maybe invite other people or share their publications through social media more so that people can also share in the experience, as this event can truly be a great benefit to people, especially to those who just really need to hear some inspiration every once in a while. If I can do the event again, my only wish is that the Christmas tree lighting would be closer.

Because of this activity, I am now more inclined to hear the stories of people, especially their stories of overcoming challenges, fears, and obstacles throughout their lives.
